With the increase in ECUs (Electronic Control Units), automotive logic control has become more complex. The initial purpose of domain controllers was not to reduce the number of vehicle ECUs, but to integrate data and enhance computing power. The so-called “domain” refers to the collection of electronic and electrical architectures that control a major functional module of the car. Each domain is uniformly controlled by a domain controller. The most typical division method is to divide the entire vehicle’s electronic and electrical architecture into five domains: power domain, chassis domain, body domain, cockpit domain, and autonomous driving domain.
The power domain, also known as the safety domain, is an intelligent powertrain management unit primarily used for optimizing and controlling the powertrain. In electric vehicles, it mainly refers to the integration of the electric drive and electric control systems, and also features functions such as electrical intelligent fault diagnosis, intelligent power saving, and bus communication. Taking new energy vehicles as an example, the power domain includes the electric control system, battery management system (BMS), electronic water pump, and onboard charger (OBC), among others.
